BackBlack exists as an advocate and resource for black-led nonprofits to receive more funding opportunities and get support from its network of partners.

I worked with BackBlack at it’s creation in 2023 to design and build a landing page in conjunction with Black Philanthropy Month, which happens annually during the month of August. I was able to continue developing the BackBlack brand and improve its digital footprint in the Spring of 2024.
I worked directly with the leader and visionary of the movement to create a simple website with pages that would provide information for donors and partners, as well as black-led nonprofits.

I created wireframes as the client provided the necessary content, to make sure that all the necessary information is easy to find and the design is accessible.
When choosing a brand font, I found options from black designers, and we eventually decided on Redaction, a bespoke typeface part of The Redaction project which seeks to highlight the abuses in the criminal justice system.

Black-led nonprofits receive significantly less funding than white-led organizations, so I felt that the movement needed a bold font that was created by black visionaries.
A promotional video had already been shot for use during the campaign, but there had been no other branding work since the campaign was brand new. Using the video as inspiration, I began putting together concepts that were modern and forward-thinking, but also evoked the passion and hopefulness of the video.

I wanted to keep colors minimalist and high contrast as to not distract from the message and information.
I recommended Squarespace as the site builder since the site was small and the BackBlack team would easily be able to make content changes post-launch. I continued iterating on the design as I began to build and content was closer to be being finalized. The site launched at the beginning of August and was shared throughout the network of partners involved in the movement.

After August, I created an additional page with graphics to illustrate the campaign’s impact throughout the month.
In the Spring of 2024, the BackBlack team reached out to me to continue work for the second year of the campaign. The layout and design of the website was largely the same, but with additional content and imagery, and implementing a Mailchimp pop-up to increase engagement.

I also worked on a number of social media templates and graphics throughout the campaign, and assisted Black Philanthropy Month on their landing page and promotional material.
